What I thought of the eBook
The book is set in 1939 and shares the story about Abigail Wilson whose parents’ died when she was very young hence she’s had to live with her Aunty Edna in Cooper’s Cottage. She soon falls in love with a charming boy called Luke whom she meets at school and finds herself pregnant with his child. Separated from Luke, she is unable to tell him that she is pregnant and her aunt decides to hide her child, Emily from the outside world. After finding out that Luke had moved overseas, 19-year-old Abigail finds the courage to leave Somerset for Bristol to give her daughter a normal upbringing. She heads to the city with the hope that she will meet Luke again one day, surviving only with the little money her father gave her before he died. Arriving in Bristol, she finds friendship with Eileen Matthews, Carrie Waters and Janet, the owner of Robertson Cafe who help her find work and hope. With war looming, these girls continue living life to the best that they can.
The author, Rosie James has got a wonderful way of telling the story that I found the eBook to be very engaging and finished reading it in just two evenings. If you are feeling down, this is such a feel-good book about family, friendship and starting anew. I found myself getting involved in the story and felt that I was part of their group as I read each chapter. I loved how courageous Abigail was as she finds herself in a new city with a young child and how determined she was to survive and find work. The eBook does contain some details about how Bristol as a town survived the war but it is mainly about the characters and how they overcome adversities.
