Family Day Out: Pumpkin Picking at Wheelock Hall Farm

Day Out Pumpkin Picking at Wheelock Hall Farm

I love Autumn! There is so much to look forward to from the changing colours of the leaves to the warm sunshine touching my skin when we go for walks in the cool Autumn weather.  The start of Autumn also means that both Thanksgiving and Halloween are not far off and as a family we look forward to activities such as pumpkin picking, enjoying warm desserts with ice-creams as well as getting cosy by the fire with a nice cuppa and a good book.

Wheelock Hall Farm in Sandbach, Cheshire was often our go-to place when both our children were younger.  We have spent many days out there looking at the farm animals, spending time in their indoor play area when the weather was bad and outdoor climbing/go-kart area and often heading to their cafe afterwards for a meal.

It was wonderful to head back to Wheelock Farm recently for pumpkin picking with the kids as they have made an effort to decorate the area and make it more festive.  There were lots of pumpkins from the main shop/garden area all the way to the outdoor picking area. I would suggest getting a wheelbarrow if you do plan to buy lots of pumpkins. Smaller pumpkins retail for £1.99 while large ones are priced at £4.99. The pumpkins have price tags on them, so you know how much they cost before you head to the cashier.

There are lots of areas for photo opportunities as well as taking selfies (my daughter is at the age where taking selfies is the main priority) around the farm and shop area.   We went during the school term break so it was busy and we had to wait for our turn when taking photos.  I would suggest going after school as it will be less busy or as soon as they open in the morning to avoid the crowds.  Do remember to wear your wellies and bring a coat as the fields can get muddy if it is wet.

Our kids also had the chance to play in all the outdoor play areas. This brought back a lot of fond memories of our previous visits to Wheelock when they were younger. They kept going round and round in circles, climbing and swinging on every piece of equipment and this was a great way for them to burn some energy as well.

How much does it cost to get into Wheelock Hall Farm?

Prices have gone up since we last visited the farm, I remember it used to be just £5 per child and no ticket for adults but it is now £7.50 per child (for children aged one and over) and £2 per adult. The ticket allows you an all-day entry and the farm is big enough for you to spend a day there,  so would recommend not planning any other activities so you can get your money’s worth.

What did we think about it?

It cost us £19 in total as a family of four and the pumpkins which were sold there were also pricey ranging from £1.99 to £4.99 each (they might cost more for larger ones).   I am sure you could get similar sized large pumpkins from Aldi, Asda or Morrissons for just £1.50 or £2 but I have to admit that the whole experience was priceless and magical for our kids.

It also meant that we had the chance to head out as a family and spend a day outdoors while both our kids had a whale of a time getting close to nature and getting wet and muddy.

There’s so much to see and do here other than just pumpkin picking. I went pumpkin picking for the first time this year but it was just pumpkins, but still very fun to choose our own x

Pumpkin farms are such a fun way to spend the fall season. It’s a great family activity and it’s fun no matter how old the kids get too!
