Review: BenQ WiT e-Reading Desk Lamp*

As we head for the winter months, one of the things we notice is that the days are getting darker earlier which means the house is not as bright especially when our children want to do some reading or their homework.

To help other parents in the same situation as us, we will be sharing the world’s first Smart tailormade WiT e-Reading Desk Lamp from BenQ which not only combines technology and  aesthetics but offers proper eye care from every aspect.  

The reading light which comes with a curved lamp head illuminates the desk space up to 90 cm, which is 150% more than traditional lamps.  It also has 2 Modes and both modes adjust the brightness and colour temperature (warm/cool) together to the most suitable level. The first mode is for e-Reading Mode while the second is for Paper-reading mode and this is controlled using a specially-made nonstop rotary knob.  

The lamp boasts of an Intelligent Design which detects ambient brightness level and delivers the right light to balance contrast and glare.  This reading light can also be used on computer desks as the light output can be adjusted to assure that it lights up the entire screen with no distracting reflection or contrast glare.

What did we think of BenQ’s WiT e-Reading Lamp ?

We love BenQ products and already have a selection of their lights such as their Piano Light which is perfect when our children need to practice their scales or piano pieces at night, as well as the Computer Screenbar which helps illuminate the screen without any glare.  I use it the screenbar often, especially now that the days are getting darker and with not much light coming into my room even in the day.

Both my children are avid readers and although I have always encouraged them reading I am very aware that they love reading in their rooms with only a normal bedside lamp and often wonder if this is one of the reasons why both my children wear glasses.

The WiT e-reading desk lamp arrived well and compact with no damage, assembling it took minutes and there was no hassle as we used the provided allen key.  The e-Reading light has the dimensions of 59 (h) x 22 (w) x 62.5 (d) with the base having a gross weight of 5.8kg.

Soon as the light was placed on the table, adjusting the height of the lamp was easy and even my 10-year-old son could do it on his own. The light does not have a switch as it is touch sensitive. We were supplied with both the (US) 2-pin adapter and the (UK) 3-pin adapter.  We needed to connect both the adapters to the socket and I found this to be slightly bulky and would have preferred if we only needed to used one adapter and not both.

We  tested the light and found out that it is recommended to use warm tones for casual reading while cool hue for doing tasks.   The design of the e-reading light looks aesthetics pleasing and very modern on the outside and the amount of technology based on the inside is emmense. There was no flickr in the LED light so it is pleasing to the eye, the ambience light detector also meant that it automatically adjusts the amount of light when switched on depending on how much light there is in the room.

The WiT e-Reading light has a highly flexible joint and features torque springs and precise friction control to balance the weight. A specially designed ball joint makes it easy to adjust the lamp cap to direct the light wherever you need it. Which is great for a young child or older adult who is struggling with mobility issues.

If the heavy and large base is an issue for you, you can opt to purchase the additional desk clamps or floor stand extensions.  The WiT e-Reading light is something I would definitely recommend purchasing for kids/teens or adults who work from home. It is also wonderful to know that BenQ uses eco-friendly materials with only 6% made from plastics and over 90% made from recyclable metal.  All materials also meet the restrictions in  the EU Directive with all WiT materials are non-hazardous.
