We were contacted by Loretta, the owner of Nyonya Recipe Shop to review some of her hand made Malaysian cookies. My kids and I love all things Malaysian as I am originally from Malaysia and we tend to head back for holidays often and Malaysian cookies are one of our favourite things to bring back to the UK. So finding out that we are able to get these cookies made locally in the UK and delivered to our doorstep was very exciting for us. We received a selection of modern and traditional cookies such as Chocolate Chip and Nut Cookies, Chocolate Chip Cookies, Cranberry Cookies, Kuih Bangkit, Peanut Biscuits as well as Dragon Balls beautifully packaged and delivered to us to review. So if you love cookies and curious to learn more about traditional Malaysian cookies keep on reading to find out more.

Chocolate Chip & Nut Cookies
The Chocolate Chip, Chocolate Chip and Nut as well as the Cranberry Cookies were individually packed in a 150g clear sealed pack. Now, these cookies are not traditional Malaysian cookies but taste more like an American cookie. These cookies reminded me of Famous Amos cookie which I used to buy often in Malaysia. Made so much like the original ones I remember, these cookies from Nyonya Recipe Shop tastes so moreish and yummy. Each of us had our favourite, my son loved the chocolate chip and nut (which had a fuller and nuttier flavour), my daughter loved the plain chocolate chip cookies and I loved the cranberry cookies (this had a chewy texture due to the dried cranberries and was the sweetest out of the three). The cookies which are made from natural ingredients were crunchy and light in texture. I also found that the chocolate chip cookies was the crumbliest (although they all arrived intact and there were no breakages whilst it was being transported). If you are sending these cookies as a gift, you can also get them to be packaged in a clear food safe PET container or gift box . We had these cookies as a snack during tea time and I also packed a couple in my children’s lunch boxes to enjoy at school. Costing £4.80 per pack, we were told that these can also be dunked in coffee or tea as well.

(From left Dragon Balls and peanut cookies)
Plant-based Peanut Cookie
These cookies are more traditional as I remember eating peanut cookies during Diwali, Chinese New Year or Hari Raya Celebrations as a child and this used to be my favourite cookie. These peanut cookies from Nyonya Recipe Shop came beautifully packaged in a Cherry Blossom Sakura gift box ready with a gift tag if you are bringing this as a gift to someone. Soon as we opened the box, we could immediately smell the peanut, there were 16 pieces cookies inside and these peanut cookies were placed is little casings to avoid spillage. The hand-made cookies had a melt in the mouth texture yet held its shape beautifully, it sure brought back a lot of wonderful memories of my childhood and my kids enjoyed them too. Priced at £6.25, you can also request for gluten-free peanut cookies.
Dragon Balls
Soon as I saw the dragon balls, I immediately was reminded of Tau Sar Piah or Tambun Biscuits as its called in Malaysia. This is a must buy biscuit every time we head to Penang, and I even got some to bring back to the UK when I was in Malacca on my last trip to Malaysia. Nyonya Kitchen’s Dragon Balls were slightly larger in size and beautifully packed in the Cherry Blossom Sakura gift box and then again individually in a small casing. There were a total of 6 pieces of these plant-based snack balls which were hand wrapped in flaky Chinese pastry and filled with mung beans (dhall). Priced at £12.90, I found that the Dragon Balls had a more subtle flavour and not as tasty when eaten at room temperature. But soon as I warmed up in the oven (as instructed), the flavours were more pronounced and the texture of the pastry was flakier. I could immediately taste the richness of the ingredients and the salty, and sweet filing coming through. I had a few of these for breakfast, or you can also have them at tea time. These can also be frozen up to 2 months.

Kuih Bangkit
Kuih Bangkit or Tapioca Biscuits (or also translated as Rise biscuits in Malay) is another traditional biscuits often served to guests during Chinese New Year’s time. I remember eating these in the shape of a fish or an animal when I was a child. This is also my children’s favourite biscuits and one which I tend to bring back as souvenirs to give to family and friends in the UK.  These Kuih Bangkit from Nyonya Recipe are very pretty to look at and comes in a beautiful Sakura gift box but the recipe has been slightly changed to Loretta’s liking as she thought that the traditional cookies did not rise as much. These were a lot crispier and did not have the traditional melt in the mouth texture which I am used to. Although I prefer the traditional recipe to this, I found the crispier version well suited by the British palate and this seems like a good replacement if you are not heading to Malaysia any time soon and are craving to try this. These cookies are also gluten-free cookies and come in either 16 pieces which cost £6.25 or 24 pieces.
Things to note:
- These cookies are hand made
- Nyonya Recipe Shop makes vegan (plant-base) and vegetarian cookies and cakes. They also do Gluten-free peanut cookies, if there is a request. If you have other allergies, let them know and they will try their best to cater.
- AÂ full breakdown of ingredients of the cakes and cookies can be found on their website
- The selection of chocolate chip/nut and chocolate chip as well as cranberry cookies can also be sent in gift boxes so these are great as presents or as a gift hamper for someone celebrating a special occasion

Loretta Lee is originally from Malaysia and she has been living in the UK for more than 10 years. She loves to cook and she has a food blog which she uses to document her food journeys and reviews of places and restaurants which she has visited. She blogs mainly about Malaysian food which she misses and tries to recreate it as authentic as she possibly can. She has experimented with British food as well. She is a carer for her daughter who has Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and since her twin sister has gone to uni, Loretta is now pursuing her own calling, hence Nyonya Recipe Shop is born. She is not a vegan yet but currently eats less meat as she is concerned about the sustainability of food, and the impact of meat farming on the environment. She can cook Chinese vegetarian food, which is actually vegan as it is known in the UK. She does regularly prepare vegetarian and vegan meals.  The products that are available at nyonya recipe are here family’s favourites cookies and are typical Malaysian snacks. She now has plant-based versions of most of her snacks, except when she is unable to find a proper substitute for eggs.
