Review: Lagenio K9 4G Kids’ Smartwatch*

[Ad-gifted] When I was sent the Lagenio K9 4G Kids’ Smartwatch to review, I’ll admit I was cautious but curious. My nine-year-old daughter has been asking about getting a phone, and I’m just not ready for that step yet. I am pro phone and social media ban for under 16’s. But if your main goal is to stay connected with your child and monitor their location without giving them a full smartphone, the Lagenio K9 smartwatch can be a practical solution.

Though Margot, my 9-year-old, doesn’t play out independently, we have talked about her walking to and from school from September, when she starts Year 5. It’s only 500 metres from the door to the school gate but I know it will worry me silly.

Aimed towards kids aged around 5 to 12 years, the watch offers 4G calling, GPS tracking, video calls and an SOS emergency function. It also focuses heavily on online safety by prohibiting access to social media apps while giving parents control and full location visibility through a mobile app. I’m sure I’ll be glued to that between 8:20-8-30am and 3:00-3-10pm from September!

The watch comes in three designs, one purple and green, one blue and red and black. We chose the “grown up” black strap and watch face and Margot absolutely loves how it looks. It’s modern and sleek without being too “babyish,” which is important at her age and is very lightweight to wear. The screen is bright and clear and very easy to use. Margot figured out how to navigate the menu and features almost immediately without me having to explain much, probably faster than me to be honest!

What I liked about the Lagenio K9 4G Kids’ Smartwatch

From my perspective as a mum, the safety features are the real highlight. The 4G calling works really well and the call quality is clear. She can send voice messages too, which she thinks is great fun. There’s even video calling, which feels surprisingly advanced for a kids’ watch and though the camera isn’t great, it works adequately enough.

The class mode is another great touch as during school hours, the watch limits distractions, so it’s not buzzing or tempting in lessons. I will have to read up on the school policy on smartwatches as I know phones are handed in at the start of the day in year 6, so they might not be permitted but even if it’s taken off and put back on at the end of the day, knowing I can track her is reassuring.

I’m also relieved that there’s no social media access as this is a big no no for me. Margot now feels a little grown-up having her “own device,” and I feel comfortable knowing she’s not exposed to the wider internet. It really does feel like a safe introduction to tech.

One thing I was curious about is the built in Nio AI platform, it listens, speaks and learns as it goes. From asking questions about tricky maths problems to everyday questions, it works like a learning companion and makes learning and homework feel like a game. That said, I wouldn’t want Margot asking for answers, but to help expand her understanding, it’s a cool little feature in this fast moving AI-powered world we now find ourselves in.

Overall, the Lagenio K9 has been a great surprise, my daughter feels a little more independent, and I feel reassured. Whilst it doesn’t have loads of extra apps or games, which is honestly a positive, it does exactly what we need it to do: keep us connected and keep her safe.

What did Margot think of the Lagenio K9 4G Kids’ Smartwatch

I really like how the watch looks and I like the fact I can call my mum when I’m at my nanny’s house. When I start walking to school, it will help me feel safe. My mum said she will still be waiting at the bottom of the road for me but we both feel safer knowing there is tracking on the watch.

I have also wanted a step tracker for ages and the watch does this too so now I can do step challenges with my mum too!
