Review: Asmodee Board Games – Dixit*

Review of Asmodee Board Games: No 3 Dixit

As you know my three have really expanded their knowledge of board games during the lockdown, but even as a family we have realised how fun they can be! I love sitting in, especially on the rainy days we have had recently and digging out a game to play together, whilst eating treats and drinking hot chocolate. This way of interacting and relaxing takes us away from our devices and gives us a break from the technological world we are surrounded in, and perhaps often engulfed by.

We aren’t awfully big on devices in our house, but my three are still hooked at times to just doing one thing, which tends to involve the TV or Lego. So, I have loved being able to drag mine away from their monotony, and sit back and play a game to pass the time. It’s been such a nice way for us all to be together and focused on something different.

This is our third and final review from our Asmodee board game collection, the first was of BrainBox Animals and the second was of Picture Show and by far this is the most unusual game of the three. I have found it refreshing to see how many different games there are available and how contrasting they actually are. As I mentioned in other reviews, growing up I was an only child and didn’t often play them, so having three children has allowed me to explore this whole new avenue of fun!

What we thought of Dixit

As stated above this game is quite different from most board games we have played as a family. Dixit is a storytelling game and the concept is to use the illustration cards and tell a story of what you see, then the other players look at their story cards and decide if they have one that may match the story they have heard. All the cards that have been chosen are then shown to the rest of the players (without them knowing whose card belongs to who

This game is great quality and the box in which it comes is where you actually play the game in. Check out our photos to see what I mean. But basically the board part of the game stays sat inside the box and your little game pieces sit inside it. The board game pieces are all little rabbits and are made from painted wooden pieces. The remaining bits of the game or small voting cards make from the thick board. Which really appear to be built to last.

The age range of this game is for 8 and above.. Considering this my youngest still joined in, although he did find it hard to stick to some of the basic rules, that being said, it didn’t affect each of their individual enjoyment of the game. The game does appear initially to be fairly complicated, but the outcome of the game is so in-depth, and although a little challenging for a six-year-old, he still enjoyed it.

The idea of taking one of the image cards and being able to describe the images/drawings/illustrations in your very own way is so interesting for them and I found it really nice to watch as the onlooking adult. It really challenges children’s creativity and expression. They can describe the picture with only a few words, a sentence, or even a sound. Their creativity is what leads the game.

I loved this game as did the kids. I think initially it takes a bit of practice to get the flow of the game and understand the rules fully. But there is a full instruction sheet with the game and it does its best to give examples of what you need to do and also gives you tips on how to play the game depending on how many players there are. My eldest son even got the cards out after we’d played and looked at things he might have said, making him think even more, about putting the right words to the pictures.

You can buy Dixit on Amazon for £23.98 – and there are a few other Dixit Games available ranging from £16 – £30 – these are for when you feel you might want a fresh set of picture cards.

Final Thoughts

We have absolutely loved reviewing these games and it has really whet our appetite to check out more games that Asmodee have on offer. Board games have been around for such a long time and I know that really each household varies on which are their favourite. I just hope that these three reviews have helped you to look and see which other games you might find to fill a space on your shelf for your family games night!

I love a good board game with friends or family. Haven’t heard of these great games though. I normally just stick to scrabble or trivial pursuit.
