Review: Gumbies Flip Flops – Fashion for Lockdown*

Last night we camped in our back garden! A first for me. I am no novice camper but I haven’t ever put the tent up in the garden! You might be thinking it is a bit early to be camping in April, but due to the weather being unusually hot and us trying to change the days up, we thought we’d make the most of it. To accompany our tent our summer style is also making a premature appearance! And even though we’re on a camp out lockdown we still want to look good – don’t we? Well next up on our review is some funky flip flops from Gumbies, that look great whilst your wearing your camping casuals and trying to fit your family of five into a three-man tent that’s parked on your back lawn!

So as you may have guessed this review is all about flip flops, not just any flip flop but Gumbies Flip Flops! I am actually starting to wonder how many times I am going to write flip flop during this whole review! When we were asked to review these thongs as the Aussies call them, we were asked to make our selection by going on their site and choosing from their Classic Islander Flip Flop. The Islander is also referred to as the 1000 miler flip flop and is the flip flop that started it all when Gumbies first came about.

Most of the flip flops on the site are unisex – although when you order you can choose from the Women’s or Men’s section. Within these sections, they are all the same colours and styles – apart from perhaps three to four additional styles available to Women. We choose a navy and red for me as I love wearing these two colours and wear them quite a lot already, and my husband choose some stripy ones as it likes his clothing to POP!

On receiving the flip flops (which surprisingly were posted through the letterbox), we were keen to put them on, and were astonished at how comfy Gumbies flip flops were, literally, as soon as we popped them on our feet! Generally, I feel with flip flops you need to be worn for a week before you take them away with you on holiday, but unbelievably these were instantly comfortable. So much so that I haven’t had mine off all day and hadn’t even realised. My husbands’ comments were that he can see these being the flip flops he wears for years to come.

What did we think?

I really really LOVED these flip flops, although not my usual style as they have quite a surfer feel to them and I tend to wear more classic flip flops. However, they still look great and feel so nice on. The fact that they fit me perfectly is also a bonus as it means I can walk really easily in them, often you feel like you are trying to keep flip flops on your feet, its not the case with Gumbies. They also have a good variety of alternative designs, so you could easily have two pairs that look different (which I might have to do!) But finally I have to say their comfort and quality match up to any big brand like Havaianas, Crocs or Nike (which are the ones we tend to buy).

Tips when choosing your size

We choose a size 10 (44) for my husband and 3 (36) for me. The flip flops fit perfectly but they are absolutely spot on – however, my husband actually foot size is 9.5 and I am a 2.5. I know that these would be small on my mum who is a true 3 therefore, I would suggest maybe sizing up, but if in doubt order and try on as they do currently have Free Returns but always check on their Shipping & Returns pages here for up to date information.

Gumbies came ‘walkabout’ by Michel Maurer who after spending time in his youth in Australia with his family, and then later in places like California began to realise the importance of the simple flip flop!
