Alsace Bredele – Butter Biscuit with Marzipan

How is your  Twixmas week? Hope you are enjoying a lovely week relaxing, shopping for bargains, visiting family and friends as well as cooking up a storm entertaining loved ones.

We are doing all this and more and sharing another delicious recipe which you can bake at home for family and friends to enjoy or add to your collection of recipes for next year’s Christmas baking.

Baking Bredeles at Christmas is popular in Alsace a region in France. The tradition is for each family to bake its own, and then offer them as a Christmas gift to neighbours.

Bredeles are biscuits or small cakes and we have shared a few of these biscuit recipes on our blog in the past, such as Anis Bredele, Boules de Linz Fourrees (Linz Biscuits with Jam), Les rochers à la noix de coco, Crackle Cookies, Chequered Biscuits and Printen Cookies.

Today we will be sharing one more to add to your collection, which is Butter Biscuits with Marzipan. Hope you enjoy baking these.

Alsace Bredele - Butter Biscuit with Marzipan

Grated zest of a lemon

Method

Cream the butter and icing sugar until light and fluffy

Beat in the chopped up marzipan and lemon zest, add the flour and knead well

Divide the dough into 3 and form each piece into a roll about 4cm thick

Chill for 20 minutes (or it can be made the night before a kept in the fridge)

Brush the egg wash or milk over the dough and roll into the sugar so it is nicely coated

Cut into pieces 5mm thickness and place on a baking tray (they spread so leave space between them)

Bake at 180 C to 200 C (I baked them at 180C) for approx. 10 minutes or until lightly golden
