Decorating Review: LICK Paint Plus Decorating Supplies*

So in order to take back some of the house, we have decided that decorating the children’s rooms first is the way forward. That way we create them their very own little sanctuary amidst the craziness of this time. When Lick chose us to send some paint to, we thought we would start first with our eldest, who wanted her room themed around Alice in Wonderland. Lick not only do paints but they also get in touch before you order (for an additional fee) and you get to chat with their in-house colour specialist who carefully considers your design ideas. Read on to find out how we got on.

What did we think of LICK?

Before we chose our paint to review we had a colour consultation with the lovely Tash, who is the head colour specialist at Lick.  She did a video call so that she could take a look at our space, asked about our wallpaper choices and asked what sort of theme we were going with for our daughter’s room. She spoke to us about potential colour options, and how we wanted to move away from the traditional pale blue that is often associated with Alice, and perhaps go for a richer deeper colour. We also sent her the room layout and idea of where the windows were, so she could see how the light may enter the room.

Once she had received all this information she spent a day compiling everything and then sent us a great colour board with all the paints we should use for each of the walls in the room, making sure that they also went with the wallpaper we had already bought from our local DIY shop. This colour consultation is a great idea is you are perhaps struggling with all the potential colour combinations in your room. So you may have already purchased part of the decor for your room but aren’t quite sure which colours might complement it best, then a colour consultation would be a sure recommendation. Tash was pleasant and approachable making all the more easy to discuss the ideas we had already decided on.

About the Paint, and decorating supplies

Having had the colour consultation we were recommended to use a deep blue, called Blue 06, which is really the idea my daughter was after. She had requested that it look like the sky of the dark wood scene where the Cheshire Cat is sitting on the tree, so Tash had really understood the concept we were going for. However, in the end, we did decide to go with the shade lighter, of Blue 05, just purely down to the fact that our daughter just thought it might feel a little too dark in the end. But we wouldn’t have thought to go for these deep colours prior to having the consultation, which is why I think this is such a great feature that LICK provide.

Well, what can I say about the paint? I absolutely loved this paint. It went onto the wall with ease and great coverage. The advantage with having also been sent a paint set too, meant that we had a paintbrush, tray, roller and masking tape, which made doing the jobs so much easier. I masked everywhere as per LICKs recommendation on their website, which meant it was so much easier to paint all the areas without worrying I would mess up the white walls, and we also used the paint to go onto the skirting boards too. So, as well as painting one feature wall, our one tub also painted a single wooden bed, the inside of the window, the window sill, the skirting boards, door frames and a desk and chair.

You really can tell the quality of the paint, when really it took just one coat to cover the wall – although we did lightly brush over a second coat on the feature wall just to cover up some paint marks I had made, but when painting the chair (see before and after photos below) it covered the black paint with ease. Using the masking tape made everything so much easier, and neater, and unlike other masking tapes I have used, they did not peel the paint off when removing it from the wall, which is a big plus.

My only critique with the painting set was the roller and the tray. Although I loved the fact that the tray is not plastic, having taken a couple of days to do the painting, I washed it on the first day and dried it in our laundry but it had already started to rust slightly (luckily only underneath). Equally, the roller just really didn’t cut it for me. I felt like the thick material it was made from didn’t cover fully in the sections where it was rolled, so it left a patchy finish. But the paintbrush we received is the best paintbrush we have had in a long time as we tend to buy expensive brushes and this way surpassed the ones we would normally buy.

All in all, I would really recommend LICK and I can’t wait to use them in our next DIY projects. They may be a high-end brand in terms of price, but bear in mind we still have some paint left and we managed to decorate a full room with one pot. And why buy ten pots of cheap paint that take coat after coat to cover the walls, when you can buy one pot of LICK paint. They also sell wallpaper too, which comes in some really beautiful designs. It is exciting to think of all the decorating I want to do! I am so inspired by what they have on offer!

How much is LICK paint, and paint sets?

The paint pot we received is priced at £38 while the single room paint set we reviewed is £20. The colour consultation costs £45 which is pricey, but if you are genuinely stuck with your colour pallet then I would recommend it. As it might avoid you buying the wrong colour hence avoiding an expensive fix. Perhaps, thinking out loud, if the consultation was instead the price of a pot of paint, I am sure it would be a good selling point?
