[Ad-gifted] Welcome to the second instalment in our Travel Game Reviews. This one is for Catchphrase, a game I grew up with in the 80s/90s – made famous by Roy Walker the original presenter of the show here in the UK – it was based on a shortlived version that originated in the US, but it was truly iconic here in the UK and has been taken over by Stephen Mulhern who is just as charismatic and funny as Walker making him the perfect person to revive this much-loved show. But if you think this show is only for TV you’re wrong as now you can take it away with you on your family breaks and have fun trying to “say what you see” with the Catchphrase game by Ginger Fox Games Ltd.
What we thought of the Catchphrase Card Game
Firstly I was curious to see how you played this having watched this time and time again on TV. I have to say it was quite similar to the TV program and easy to get on with. You have cards that look like a TV screen and they have the potential Catchphrase illustration on them – there is a different image on both sides of the card each with the answer for that image on the opposite side and a reveal sleeve so you can’t get a sneak peek of the answer – as its covered over when placed in the sleeve.
There is a card that acts as a buzzer that sits in the centre of the players. You need a minimum of three players (like on TV) to play this game, but you can have more people play if you like. The Catchphrase card sits at the side of the buzzer card and then once you think you have it – you buzz in. We played this and pretended to host it like on TV having three players plus a host so say – “Say what you see” and “It’s good, but it’s not right” (original Roy Walker Catch phrases from the show).
Again this can be used as a travel game (although not specifically made as one) as it’s small and can fit easily in a suitcase/rucksack. It’s a great one to play on the plane or when you’re enjoying family time while you’re away. Another fun aspect is the bonus cards have an interactive feature of a QR code for an animated Catchphrase image – but we choose not to use this feature often as I don’t like the kids to be on devices whilst they are playing board games (I feel it can defeat the point) but it is nice to do this every now and then and adds a different dynamic to the game.
