What did my 10-year-old daughter think of Emelia Moorgrim and The Medieval Monsters of Norfolk ?

The book is about Emelia and her toy cat Monty (that comes to life) and their exciting adventures using their time travel watch to go through history, untangle mysteries and find the monsters that have jumped out of a medieval book before they cause too much trouble.

The book really starts to get exciting when Emelia wanted another look at all the achives so she explained to her cat Monty to NOT PRESS THE RED BUTTON but Monty couldn’t stop himself so he had to press that red button and out came 10 medieval monsters; the Mean Mud Wriggler, the Sneaky Sea Snake, the Wicked Winged Wonder, the Grumpy Glumpy Frog, the Lumbering Lazy Lollop Lion, the Pesky Busy Buzz Fuzzer, the Rugged Ruff Grumbler, the Swirly Whirly Curly Firework Bird, the Prickly Tricky Truffle Trixter and the Great Big Howling Growling Gobble.

These medieval monsters next escape from the book and jump into various historical items such as books, booklets, newspapers, pictures, photos, posters and postcards.  Emelia and Monty now have to travel through time to recapture these monsters and bring them back before they cause trouble.

I thought that the book was very interesting as I liked the concept of it and how it is was set up as each chapter incorporates Norfolk as well as various historical facts in a fun way without making it boring.

I also loved all the creative names which were given to the medieval creatures and how each one goes into a different item such as books or posters.  This then creates a different scene for the whole story and how each creature had to be captured in a different way and then sent back into the original book where they escaped from.

About the Author

Isabelle is the author of The Norfolk Story Book, Once Upon A Time in Norfolk and Once Upon A Street’ With the first book, she toured schools with the Norfolk and Norwich Festival 2017 and was shortlisted as a finalist for the Norfolk Arts Awards/People’s Choice Awards 2017. She is the founder of a Prince’s Trust supported enterprise called Books Talk Back through which she runs literary events for The British Library.
