Review: Fun Food Bingo Game from Orchard Toys Games*

We introduced our four-year-old daughter to bingo last year with Orchard Toys’ Halloween Bingo, from the mini games range, and she absolutely loved it, so we were keen to try a full-size game.

Fun Food Bingo from Orchard Toys Games is aimed at children aged 3-6 years, but as most people enjoy the odd game of bingo, it’s a good game to play as a family.

The box contains four bingo boards, a bag to draw cards from, knife and fork counters, and fun food character cards.

Each player draws a card from the bag and calls out the friendly food character. If the food matches a picture on anyone’s board, those players place a knife and fork counter over the matching space. The first person to cover their board and shout “bingo!” wins.

On the reverse of the bingo boards there are plates, so that you can also use the game for pretend play, using the food characters to make up meals.

What we thought of the Fun Food Bingo from Orchard Toys Games

Jemma loved playing this food-themed bingo game right from the start. It was quick and easy to set-up and no complicated rules to decipher! All of the pieces are bright and colourful, and the cards are nice and chunky, a win for durability but also good for little hands to handle. The little bag used to draw the cards from is also very handy to keep all of the little pieces save inside the box.

From playing bingo before, Jemma understood the game and what she needed to do. It’s great that you can play with just two people, as it means when it’s just us at home, it’s a fun game we can play together.

Playing bingo is great for teaching her to focus on the game, follow rules, learn about matching, and counting to see how many more counters she needs to win the game.

This food-themed version takes the traditional game to a whole new level, encouraging conversations about food, but in a fun, no pressure way. There are foods from every food group, including some sweet treats like ice cream and a cupcake. For children who are not very adventurous with their food choices, it’s a great way of introducing them to foods they may be less familiar with.

Jemma always like to make up her own games, with her own rules, so the reverse side of the boards was great for this. She had great fun making up meals for the whole family… including the dog! We talked about our favourite foods and what we would like on our plate. She then added some of her toys into the mix and made meals for them too.

It’s also an activity that she can play independently, always helpful when you’re trying to do a million jobs.
