Review: Asmodee Game - Times Up Party

As we approach Christmas this year, I am sure most of us might be just spending it with our immediate family, so we have got as many distractions to occupy the kids when we are trying to get dinner ready! Well, this is where our second Asmodee review comes in as we recently reviewed Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza. We were sent Time’s Up, a great game to play with 4 or more players, and ideal for around the dinner table when you’re waiting for your turkey or nut roast to cook!

This game could also be played as a stop-gap in the day to occupy everyone after dinner too, when its not quite late enough to have a much-needed nap, and you need something to keep your dad awake with! Although the game needs four players its easily adaptable to play with fewer people if you just get the gist of the game going, and play it by not quite sticking to the exact rules.

This is our second out of three Asmodee game reviews, so read on to find out what we thought…

What we thought of the game

My children loved the concept of this game, although really they are a little young to play it fully. My eldest daughter who is 11 and 9 years-old could easily play this within a team of adults (which is what we did) whereas its a little complicated for our 6-years-old but having said that he still had fun joining in. The game comes in a small box and could also be easily taken away on holiday, but means that it doesn’t take up too much room in your cupboard. Some board games contain so little but seem to come in the biggest boxes, but this game is a perfect size for you to fit alongside multiple Asmodee games!

The general idea of the game is as follows; you choose a card which has a famous or historical person’s name written on it, and then round 1 you have to use words to describe this person to your team members and they have to guess. You have a timer so you have to guess as many cards as possible within that time. When the time is up and you have counted how many cards you have guessed you move on to the next team for them to do the same. It then moves to round two which involves picking up a card again (from the same deck as your last selected card) and this time you have to mime the clues. Which is really funny to watch as my children were bouncing off the sofa, and acting as though they were breaking into pieces trying to describe Humpty Dumpty!

The game is like a slightly more complex version of charades with the addition of scoring points against the other team to win. In total it takes around 40 minutes to one hour to play, which for us was great gameplay as sometimes I find games end too quickly whereas with this one the fun carries on for a good while and has interesting enough and entertaining enough to really make it worth it. Also, just in case you are worried about not knowing who some of the famous people are from the names, there is a handy little book with short descriptions on who these people are, which means no one should get stuck! ha

About the game

The game is aimed at age 12+ and needs 4-12 players (although I think you could potentially have more players – once we’re allowed to get together – and create larger teams), it takes around 40 minutes to play. It comes in a box around 15cm x 10cm cubed, and contains around 300 cards with two people to quiz on each, a timer, instructions and a scoring card.

Note this game also comes in a Family version for age 8+ and a kids version for 4+

I’m not particularly good at charades and games like this, but I bet it would be a good laugh to play. And as you said the perfect length for Christmas day x
