Children’s Book Review: Jay-Jay The Supersonic Bus by Sue Wickstead*

by Yeah Lifestyle

Just as much as we love reading books, we love it even more, when our kids read and get the opportunity to review books as we want to encourage our children to read and want to instill the love for reading in them. We were recently sent Jay-Jay The SuperSonic Bus by Sue Wickstead to review on the blog.  The book which came out in print in 2014 has since been followed by five more picture books due to its success.  Read on to see what both our children thought about it.

In a nutshell, Jay Jay The Supersonic Bus is about a bus which is rescued from the dirty scrap yard, where he was sadly gathering dust and cobwebs.  He is soon taken to an airport where he is magically transformed into a ‘Playbus’ full of toys, games and adventure. A fictional tale based on a real-life bus ‘Supersonic’, which flew in the imaginations of the many young children who visited it.

The book is perfect to be read as a standalone book, or you can get the whole collection.  It was thin enough for us to take with us on our Days Out as well as sleepovers to read to the kids before bedtime. My children found the pictures in the book very colourful and the book easy enough to hold. My son who is 6-years-old said that the book looks like a fun book to read and he read it easily while my daughter who is 8-year-old breezed at reading it. As a parent, I felt that there was a lot more packed into the book as the font used was smaller. This encouraged my son to read more than he usually would at one go as there were no chapters in the book. They both loved the book as they said it had a happy ending to it. Sue is an amazing children’s Book author and has a way with words and bringing smiles to children’s faces!  We enjoy her books and have also showcased her Christmas themed book called The Christmas Play in our Christmas Gift Guide last year.

How much does the book cost and how can I order one?

The paperback copy of the book retails for £6.99 and you can purchase a copy off Amazon here.

About Sue Wickstead

Sue Wickstead is a teacher and an author and has currently written six children’s picture books with a bus theme.  In addition, she has also written a photographic history book about the real bus behind her story writing. Her bus stories are about a playbus.  Her inspiration for the book came about from when Sue’s two children were young, they attended a playgroup on a bus, but not an ordinary bus taking you on a journey, exciting though this is, but a Playbus stuffed full of toys to capture their imagination!
For over 20 years, alongside her teaching career, she worked with the charity, the Bewbush Playbus Association.
As part of the committee, she painted the bus, worked in the groups, helped raise the profile of the project and its work and was part of the team involved in raising funds to replace the old bus with a newer vehicle. This led her to write a photographic history book about it.  Having written the history book Sue soon found that many children had never been on a bus before, let alone a ‘Playbus’ and they wanted to know more. So, she decided to write a fictional tale, his number plate JJK261, gave him his name.

This sounds like a great book for children. I like the idea of a hero that is a bus, and not a human. I also think that the idea behind the story is quite inspiring, that no matter what, you can still do great things even if you find yourself in a “scrapyard”. 🙂
